A brand-new vision arose like a phoenix from the ashes after monthly meetings with River Ridge community members. JPRD, in conjunction with Council District 3 Byron Lee’s Office, hosted an event for the community in the Owens Playground District after hearing and addressing concerns surrounding the playground. The participation at Jesse Owens Playground has been declining, leaving the playground underutilized and without programs for residents. JPRD identified issues with the lifeless playground and sought to restore a new fire for the playground to have a rebirth. The Come Back to Owens event showcased the efforts created and in place for the gym to soar. Several community organizations stepped up to ignite the flames of continued progress.

The community organizations include Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Acadian Ambulance, Jefferson Parish Public Library, Hancock Whitney Bank, Blue Runner Foods, Inc., Audubon Nature Institute, Stratus Building Solutions, Jefferson Parish Diversity and Inclusion Board, Raising Canes, McAlister’s Deli, Custom Apparel, and Open Door Travel Agency. Residents signed up for summer camp, athletic programs, and a new dance class at the playground. The event marked the awakening of a new era for Jesse Owens Playground and paved the way for the community to set its district ablaze with fantastic innovation.
